Peter Smith is a musician & educator of some 25 years
experience. Born in Toronto, he attended high school in Port Perry then
went on to the music program at Humber College. Touring Canada, the US,
and Europe with various popular bands through the eighties; he returned
to University of Toronto in 1991 to obtain
degrees in both Jazz Performance and Music Education. Doubling on flute
and clarinet, Peter has studied with such greats as Pat LaBarbera, Phil
Nimmons, Frank Falco and Alex Dean.
A published composer
and arranger, he primarily performs and records freelance or as leader
of his own ensembles
while adjudicating and teaching master
classes, music camps, and private students. He also manages PoteSmote Music; booking and
organizing various ensembles for public and private events. Coach to
the Advocats, a
pro-am big band, and facilitator of a regular jazz
workshop, Peter is also part-time faculty at Upper Canada College.
Peter's primary
instruments are saxophone and flute. His interests lay in the
historical evolution of Jazz and popular music and the ever-increasing
influence of other musics such as Latin and World Beat. His first
CD 'Caliente
& Cool' has these elements; the
band's second, somewhat seasonal release 'Yule Like This'
explores them further. The recently released 'Blue
& Green' is a 'live in the studio' recording of the Latin
quartet. PSQFunk
explores the influence of electronics and ampification on jazz. 'Live and Then Some' is a compilation of
live tracks from various venues such as JazzFM's Science Centre series.
His playing,
compositions and arrangements can be heard on a number of recordings
besides his own, including:
Heather Bambrick, Anita
Perras, the Full Count
Blues Band, Freefall, Grace, Nazka, Cassava, the Tokyo Giants, and Adrian Luces.
Peter Smith also
performs freelance with other artists, notably:
Colin James,
Heather Bambrick, and the Full Count Blues Band.
